Better Postures, Better Health

Importance of a Good Posture

One factor that is adding to the problems related to bones and weak muscles along with stress related issues is improper posture. There are various benefits that are associated with a good posture, which may include, but are not limited to;

  1. Easier breathing
  2. Better alignment of joints and muscles
  3. Improved digestion of food
  4. Improved circulatory system
  5. Minimal chances of straining the back and spine
  6. Lesser fatigue

Other than this, a good posture on an individual reflects his/her self-confidence. The importance of a proper posture cannot be emphasized enough as it releases the bodies and muscles of the unrequired compression and burden.

How to sit properly

Since many individuals go to work and spend most of their day sitting at their desks, it is important to know the proper posture for sitting, for ensuring better health. These individuals must remember to;

  1. Avoid slouching and instead aligning their backs with the chair, for maximum support.
  2. Those individuals who spend most of their time in front of computers or on chairs should opt for ergonomic chairs or make use of a pillow to support their lumbar parts. To avoid slouching the monitor can be placed a few inches upwards.
  3. Make use of the footrest. If that is not possible both feet should be placed flat against the floor.
  4. Shoulders should always be straight and squared as in the case of standing up.
  5. The neck, back, heels and head should be aligned.
  6. Ensure that there is an angle of seventy-five to ninety degrees at the elbows when sitting.

While at work it is important to remember to take standing breaks or stretch legs after regular intervals. One major reason of the improper bones and muscles functioning is that employees become so engrossed in work that they do not move around. Instead, they should make sure to walk around or do stretching exercises to keep their various body systems working efficiently.

Complications due to Improper Posture

Some of the common problems which are related to improper posture include, but are not limited to;

  1. Carpal tunnel syndrome
  2. Hernia
  3. Constipation
  4. Sciatica
  5. Muscle strain/pain
  6. Reduced lung performance
  7. Jaw aches
  8. Obstructed flow of blood
  9. Impingement and nerve compression
  10. Acid reflux and other related problems.

Stretching for Better Posture

In order to align the muscles of the body it is important to do stretching exercises twice in a day. These exercises target the vital muscles and help in optimal positioning of the organs, joints and bones. A compact exercise plan should include;

  1. Abdominal and lumbar work out
  2. Thigh stretch
  3. Hamstring stretch
  4. Shoulder, neck and back workout
