3 Common Outpatient Eye Procedures You Might Need

The eyes are undoubtedly one of the most important human organs and the sense of sight is incredibly vital from the moment a person wakes up till they go back to sleep.

However, many people engage in all kinds of activities that could potentially harm their vision. They may do it knowingly or unknowingly. Other than that, many people suffer damage from injuries or not wearing UV sunglasses on bright days.

3 Common Outpatient Eye Procedures You Might Need

Regardless of what causes deterioration or damage to your eyes, you should consult with a professional immediately to discuss the course of the treatment. There are plenty of common procedures that you should be scared of, some of which are detailed below.

LASIK

LASIK might be the most common eye procedure around the world. The reason is that LASIK allows people who have a problem with vision and wear glasses or contacts to restore their vision.

LASIK, or laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis, fixes the way your eyes focus to allow you to see better without glasses or contacts. The procedure uses a laser to remove the tissue under your cornea to reshape your cornea.

While that may sound scary, it is very common and the reshaping can correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. It is an outpatient procedure, and it shouldn’t take more than an hour to get things done. However, you might feel some discomfort and sensitivity for a couple of days after it.

Cataract Surgery

A cataract is a name given to something that develops on the lens of your eyes. It can make your sight cloudy, and your vision blurry or dull.

Cataracts can develop over time depending on your external environment. They can also happen from too much exposure to sunlight, like getting a bad sunburn on your skin

If you go to a medical professional for cataract treatments, you might find that surgery is one of the best options, depending on the condition of your lens. In the surgery, the doctor will remove your cloudy lens and replace it with an artificial one to allow you to see properly again.

The whole thing can be done in an hour. But the recovery can take a few days, and you might feel some itching and discomfort while your eye gets used to the new lens.

Glaucoma Surgery

When there is a buildup of pressure on your optic nerve, then you might need glaucoma surgery.

For different reasons, you might have pressure building up on your optic nerve. As the pressure increases, your ability to see from that eye will decrease. If you don’t consult a professional soon, it can even lead to blindness.

In a glaucoma procedure, the doctor will remove the pressure from your optic nerve. The first option would be laser-assisted surgery. You can go home as soon as it is done, and you can get back to normal life the next day.

But if the laser glaucoma isn’t effective, then you might need to get conventional surgery. But don’t worry, both of them are outpatient procedures. However, it may take about a week for you to get back to your normal activities with the conventional glaucoma procedure.
